Care & installation
Silk is not a material for compromise. It demands precision, discipline, and a refusal to tolerate mediocrity. This guide outlines the unyielding requirements for installation and maintenance of Noir Maison silk wallcoverings. No exceptions. No concessions.
Substrate Preparation
The surface must be flawless. Any imperfection—dust, moisture, or irregularity—will be magnified by the material’s sensitivity. Ensure the wall is:
- Completely dry, with no residual moisture from previous treatments.
- Smooth and flat, with no raised edges or uneven joints.
- Primed with a water-based primer if the substrate is porous or uncoated.
- Free of any contaminants, including oils, adhesives, or solvents.
Paste Application
Use only the paste type specified by Noir Maison. Dilution or substitution is prohibited. Apply paste:
- Evenly across the back of the wallcovering, avoiding saturation.
- With a firm, continuous motion to eliminate air pockets.
- Immediately after mixing, as paste dries rapidly and loses adhesion.
- On a clean, non-porous work surface to prevent contamination.
Seam Handling
Seams are a failure point. Minimize them, and when unavoidable, execute them with clinical precision:
- Overlap seams by at least 10 cm to allow for shrinkage and alignment.
- Use a seam tape specifically designed for silk, avoiding any adhesive with acidic components.
- Press seams with a clean, dry cloth to ensure full contact and eliminate visible ridges.
- Never stretch the material; force will distort the weave and compromise structural integrity.
Cleaning
Silk does not forgive negligence. Clean only when necessary, and with the utmost restraint:
- Use a dry microfiber cloth for surface dust. No water, no solvents.
- For spills, blot immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth. Never rub.
- Apply a pH-neutral, water-based cleaner sparingly, and only to the affected area.
- Wipe in a single direction, avoiding circular motions that may lift the weave.
Light Exposure
Light is the enemy. Prolonged exposure accelerates degradation:
- Install UV-protective film on windows to reduce light intensity by at least 90%.
- Avoid placing silk near direct sunlight, heat sources, or reflective surfaces.
- Rotate or reposition the wallcovering periodically to distribute light exposure evenly.
- Never use abrasive or chemical-based cleaners on light-exposed areas.
Lifespan and Long-Term Care
Silk is not a permanent fixture. It requires vigilance to sustain its integrity:
- Expect a lifespan of 10–15 years with optimal conditions. Humidity, light, and neglect will shorten this.
- Inspect seams and edges monthly for signs of wear, lifting, or discoloration.
- Never expose silk to steam, moisture, or direct contact with water.
- Store unused rolls in a cool, dry place, sealed in airtight containers to prevent dust accumulation.
